Understanding IP ratings
IEC Standard 529 established a system for rating "Ingress Protection" for electrial equipment, including luminaires.
The first digit indicates the level of protection against intrusion from foreign bodies, including dust. The second digit indicates the level of protection against harmful entry of moisture.

NEMA and Other Hosedown/Immersion Protection Rating Systems:
There are other systems for rating ingress protection, including the NEMA Enclosure Type system. But please note, these Numbers cover different environmental factors. The tests for these characteristics are also different, so even if there is some overlap, IP rating codes can not be exactly equated with the NEMA enclosure types.
